How to Design an Engagement Ring Online (2026)
By Ryan Clayton, founder of Lavora Diamonds, Provo, Utah. Last updated August 2026.
"Design your own engagement ring" means four very different things online. Some tools let you pick from a menu. Some let you actually draw something new. The prices and timelines are not close. Here is the honest comparison.
What are the actual options for designing a ring online?
| Route | How custom it really is | Typical all-in (2ct lab) | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online ring builder (pick setting + pick stone) | Configured, not custom. Fixed catalogue of settings. | $2,400-$4,500 | 1-3 weeks |
| Marketplace / Etsy seller | Varies wildly by seller. Certification often unclear. | $900-$3,000 | 2-6 weeks |
| Chain jeweler custom desk | Semi-custom, from house styles. Retail markup applies. | $4,500-$9,000 | 4-8 weeks |
| Direct custom CAD (designed from your reference) | Fully custom. Drawn to your specs before anything is made. | $1,500-$3,500 | 3-5 weeks |
Why is the price gap so wide for the same diamond?
Because the diamond is rarely where the money goes. An IGI-certified 2ct G/VS2 lab-grown stone trades at a similar wholesale number no matter who sells it. What changes is everything stacked on top: showroom leases, sales commission, inventory financing, and marketplace fees.
A 2ct oval solitaire in 14K gold runs roughly $1,500-$1,775 all-in when it is built direct, stone and setting and CAD included. The same specs at a traditional retail counter usually lands 30-50% higher. Ask for the IGI report number on both and compare like for like.
Which route gets you a genuinely custom ring?
Only the CAD route. The test is simple: do you see a 3D rendering of your specific ring, and approve it, before anything is manufactured? If the answer is no, you are choosing from a catalogue, not designing.
A real custom process should include a CAD render you can request changes to, the exact IGI report number for your center stone, and a written price that does not move after you approve.
How do you avoid the two most common mistakes?
- Comparing carat instead of millimetres. A 2ct marquise looks far larger on the hand than a 2ct round. Ask for the measurements on the report, not just the weight.
- Comparing quotes that are not the same ring. Colour, clarity, cut grade, metal karat and whether the setting is solid or plated all move the number. Line them up spec by spec.
- Accepting "gold" without a karat. Solid 14K and 18K hold up for decades. Plated does not.
- Paying before a CAD approval. Any custom order should show you the design first.
What should you send to get an accurate online quote?
Four things get you a real number in one message: a screenshot of the style you like, your budget, ring size, and your proposal timing. That is enough to spec the stone and quote the setting without a call.
FAQ
Is it safe to design an engagement ring online?
Yes, provided the center stone comes with an independent IGI or GIA report you can look up by number, and you approve a CAD render before production starts. Those two checks remove most of the risk.
Is designing online cheaper than a jewelry store?
Usually, and the reason is overhead rather than quality. Direct custom typically lands 30-50% below a traditional retail counter on identical certified specs.
How long does a custom engagement ring take?
Three to five weeks is normal for a fully custom build: CAD design and approval, then casting, setting and finishing. Rush timelines are sometimes possible, so give your proposal date up front.
Can I design a ring online from outside Utah?
Yes. The entire process runs over text and email, and finished rings ship insured anywhere in the US.
