A real 4 carat we built
4.02ct oval brilliant, E colour, VVS2 clarity, 14K yellow gold basket solitaire, 2mm band, with a custom interior inscription: $3,349 all-in. IGI Report LG799653539.
Note what that means — E/VVS2 is a genuinely high spec, and it still came in under $3,400 because the setting was simple. At 4 carats the setting choice matters as much as the grades.
The 4 carat trap
Price does not scale linearly with carat. Going 3ct → 4ct is roughly a 45% price increase, not 33%, because larger rough is disproportionately scarcer even in lab-grown. So the marginal dollar at this size buys less size than it did at 2ct.
The practical consequence: at 4 carats, drop colour and clarity before you drop carat. A 4.0ct in H/VS2 looks bigger and costs less than a 3.5ct in D/VVS1, and nobody at the wedding is holding a loupe.
Will 4 carats look too big?
Depends far more on shape than carat. A 4ct round is compact and deep. A 4ct oval, marquise or elongated cushion spreads across the finger and reads much larger. Ask for the millimetre measurements on the IGI report — that is what you actually see, not the carat number.
