Which of the 4Cs actually matters most?
Cut, by a wide margin. Cut controls light return — the sparkle you actually see across a room. A poorly cut D-color stone looks duller than a well-cut G. Cut is also the only C that cannot be improved later or hidden by a setting. Never go below Excellent (or Ideal, on round brilliants).
How low can you go on color?
In white gold or platinum, F and G face up white to the naked eye. In yellow or rose gold, H and even I look white against the warm metal, because the setting sets the reference point. Paying for D or E in a yellow gold ring buys a difference almost nobody can see.
How low can you go on clarity?
VS1 and VS2 are eye-clean in virtually every stone. SI1 is often eye-clean too, but it needs to be checked stone by stone — the inclusion's position matters more than the grade. VVS1 and VVS2 look identical to VS at arm's length. On a lab-grown budget, clarity above VS1 is the most common place money gets spent for no visible gain.
Does the same combination work for every shape?
Mostly, with two adjustments. Step cuts — emerald and asscher — have large open facets that show inclusions and tint more readily, so hold clarity at VS1 and color at F or better. Brilliant-faceted shapes such as round, oval, cushion, pear and radiant hide more, so G/VS2 performs beautifully. Elongated shapes also look larger per carat than their weight suggests.

- Hold cut at Excellent or Ideal. Do not trade it away for carat.
