How to Compare Two Diamond Quotes (IGI Specs Explained)

Compare the complete ring and the written terms, not just carat weight or the headline price. Matching diamond grades are a starting point; they do not prove that two diamonds look identical or that two settings have the same construction.

Start with the diamond report

Ask each seller for the grading laboratory, report number and a copy of the center stone's report. Check the report directly with the issuing laboratory. For an IGI-graded diamond, use IGI's report verification and its guide to reading a lab-grown diamond report.

Check origin, shape, carat weight, measurements, color, clarity, and the cut and finish information actually provided on that report. Ask for a video of the specific diamond as well as the report. A grading report describes a diamond; it does not price the complete ring or replace inspecting its appearance.

A checklist for comparing two written quotes

• Center stone: Is it lab-grown or natural? Record its report number, shape, exact weight, measurements and grades. Keep center-stone weight separate from total carat weight, which can include side stones.
• Appearance: Compare videos in similar lighting. Ask the seller to explain visible differences between the actual stones, even when their grades match.
• Setting: Match metal and purity, band width and thickness, setting style, side stones and the details of the proposed construction.
• Design: Confirm whether the quote includes custom design, a CAD rendering, revisions and your approval before production.
• Total cost: Ask for the diamond and setting amounts where available, plus applicable tax, shipping, design charges and any other fees. Compare totals on the same basis.
• Timing: Separate design time, production after approval and shipping. Get an estimated delivery date for your proposal plans.
• Aftercare: Read the actual return, cancellation, resizing and warranty terms. Ask which services cost extra.
• Availability: Confirm that the quoted diamond is available, how long the quote is valid and what reserves it.

Does the same IGI grade mean the same diamond?

No. Two stones can share several grades while having different measurements and appearance. If a seller says it is the same physical diamond, ask for the matching report number and confirmation of availability. If it is a different stone, compare it as an alternative and identify the differences.

What if information is missing?

Ask for the missing details before deciding. A bundled price or incomplete first estimate is a reason to request clarification; it is not, by itself, proof that a seller is overcharging. Record unanswered questions alongside the price.
