Bezel vs Prong Engagement Ring Setting
Bezel vs prong setting: which is better for an engagement ring?
Short answer: A bezel setting wraps a thin rim of metal around the diamond, so it holds the stone securely and has a smooth, snag-resistant edge, but it shows a little less of the diamond and lets in less light from the sides. A prong setting holds the diamond with small metal claws, showing more of the stone and letting in more light, but prongs can catch on fabric and should be checked over time.

Side-by-side comparison
| Bezel setting | Prong setting | |
|---|---|---|
| How it holds the stone | Metal rim around the edge | 4 or 6 metal claws |
| Look | Modern, clean outline | Classic; more diamond visible |
| Light | Less light from the sides | More light enters the stone |
| Snagging | Smooth edge, rarely snags | Prongs can catch on hair or fabric |
| Protection | Rim protects the girdle (edge) | Edge is more exposed |
Does a bezel make the diamond look smaller?
The metal rim covers the very edge of the stone, so the diamond can look slightly smaller than in prongs. A thin bezel or a white-metal bezel around a white diamond keeps the difference small.
Who should choose a bezel?
People who work with their hands, are active, or want a modern look often prefer a bezel. People who want the most sparkle and the classic solitaire look usually choose prongs.
How Lavora works
Lavora Diamonds designs custom engagement rings around IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds, typically in the VVS1–VS1 clarity range. You see a 3D model of your ring in 24–48 hours, and production takes 4–5 weeks after 3D approval and payment, or 2–3 weeks (14–21 days) with rush. Complete engagement rings have a $2,000 minimum. See a completed bezel build on our 2 carat bezel ring price page.

Frequently asked questions
Is a bezel setting more secure than prongs?
A bezel surrounds the whole edge of the diamond, so it generally protects the stone better against knocks than prongs. Any setting should be checked by a jeweler from time to time.
Do prong settings snag?
They can. Raised prongs can catch on sweaters, hair or gloves, especially high-set prongs.
Which setting shows more sparkle?
A prong setting usually shows more sparkle because more of the diamond is exposed to light.
Can I see a bezel and a prong version before choosing?
Yes. At Lavora you see a 3D model in 24–48 hours and can ask for revisions before production.
