The 4Cs of Diamonds Explained: Cut, Color, Clarity & Carat Guide (2026)

Understanding the 4Cs is the single most important thing you can do before buying a diamond engagement ring. Whether you're looking at lab-grown or mined diamonds, these four factors determine a diamond's beauty, quality, and price.

1. Cut: The Most Important C

Cut refers to how well a diamond's facets interact with light. It's not the shape (oval, round, etc.) — it's the precision of the cutting. A well-cut diamond will sparkle brilliantly, while a poorly cut diamond will look dull even if it has perfect color and clarity.

Cut grades (best to worst): Ideal/Excellent > Very Good > Good > Fair > Poor

Our recommendation: Always prioritize cut quality. At Lavora Diamonds, we only source Excellent and Ideal cut diamonds because cut has the biggest impact on how stunning your ring looks on her finger.

2. Color: Less Is More

Diamond color is graded on a scale from D (completely colorless) to Z (noticeable yellow tint). The less color, the more valuable and brilliant the diamond appears.

Color grade ranges:

  • D-F: Colorless — premium tier, virtually no color visible
  • G-H: Near colorless — excellent value, color nearly invisible to the naked eye
  • I-J: Slight warmth — noticeable in certain settings but great budget option
  • K+: Visible color — not recommended for engagement rings

Our recommendation: G-H color offers the best balance of beauty and value. Most of our clients choose this range and are thrilled with their diamond's appearance.

3. Clarity: What the Eye Can See

Clarity measures the presence of internal inclusions and external blemishes. The grading scale runs from FL (Flawless) to I3 (heavily included).

Clarity grades:

  • FL/IF: Flawless/Internally Flawless — extremely rare and expensive
  • VVS1/VVS2: Very Very Slightly Included — inclusions invisible under 10x magnification
  • VS1/VS2: Very Slightly Included — minor inclusions, not visible to naked eye
  • SI1/SI2: Slightly Included — may be visible to naked eye depending on placement

Our recommendation: VS1-VS2 is the sweet spot. You get an "eye-clean" diamond at a significantly lower price than VVS or FL grades. Your diamond will look flawless to everyone who sees it.

4. Carat: Size vs. Quality

Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its visual size. A 1-carat diamond weighs 200 milligrams. Larger diamonds are rarer and more expensive per carat, which is why price increases exponentially — a 2-carat diamond costs much more than twice the price of a 1-carat stone.

Popular carat sizes for engagement rings:

  • 0.75 - 1.00ct: Classic and elegant
  • 1.00 - 1.50ct: Most popular range
  • 1.50 - 2.50ct: Statement size, increasingly popular
  • 3.00ct+: Luxury tier

Pro tip: With lab-grown diamonds, you can often afford 2-3x the carat size compared to mined diamonds at the same budget. A 2-carat lab-grown diamond at Lavora starts around $3,000 — the same stone mined could run $20,000+.

How to Balance the 4Cs on a Budget

Here's the priority order we recommend to maximize beauty while staying within budget:

  1. Cut first: Never compromise on cut quality
  2. Carat second: Choose the size that fits her style and your budget
  3. Color third: G-H gives near-colorless beauty at a better price
  4. Clarity last: VS2 is eye-clean and saves significantly vs. higher grades

Why Lab-Grown Diamonds Win on the 4Cs

Lab-grown diamonds are graded on the exact same 4Cs scale as mined diamonds. Because they cost 40-60% less, you can upgrade your 4Cs across the board. Instead of a 1-carat G-VS2 mined diamond for $6,000, you could get a 2-carat G-VS1 lab-grown diamond for the same price.
